Ingredients
- rice
- nori
- Crab sticks
- avocado
- ginger
- soy sauce
- wasabi
- Philadelphia cheese
Recipe
1. Cook the sushi rice according to the package directions, then spread it out and let it cool to room temperature.
2. Cut the avocado and crab sticks into thin strips.
3. Lay a sheet of nori shiny-side down on a bamboo rolling mat and spread a thin, even layer of rice over it, leaving a bare strip along the far edge.
4. Arrange the avocado, crab sticks, and cream cheese in a line across the rice.
5. Roll the nori up tightly, using the mat to shape and compress it. Seal the bare edge with a dab of water.
6. Whisk the plain flour (all-purpose flour) with the beer or sparkling water to make a smooth batter, about the thickness of heavy cream.
7. Coat the roll all over in the batter.
8. Heat oil in a deep skillet (frying pan) over medium-high heat and fry the roll, turning, until the batter is golden and crisp all over. Drain briefly on paper towels.
9. Let it rest for a minute, then slice into 8 pieces with a wet, sharp knife.
10. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
